THE PRISONS REFORMATION PROJECT

In 2003, GAMP visited the James Fort Prisons in Accra to present items to the inmates as part of its annual charity activities. The Academy was astonished to know that about two-thirds of the inmates numbering over 700 at the time were Muslims.

Very much touched by the situation, the Academy decided to complement the reformation efforts by the Ghana Government. It, therefore, unveiled the Prisons Reformation Programme in 2003 at the James Fort Prisons in Accra.

The core objectives of the Prison Reformation Programme (PRP) are:

  • To instil moral uprightness among inmates
  • To encourage the inmates to reintegrate into society after the reformation period.
  • To enhance the religiosity of the Muslim inmates
  • To help the inmates with basic needs such as food and clothing
  • To teach the Muslim inmates about Islam.

The Academy has since the inception of the PRP embarked on activities such as assigning an Imam to interact with the Muslim inmates through weekly seminars after Jumuah Prayers on Fridays. Aside from supporting the inmates including the non-Muslims with clothes and food, we also Pray and celebrate Eid with the inmates. After serving their jail terms or being found innocent, we collaborate with the Prison authorities to reintegrate them into society.
